Avoid Hurricane Honeymoon Disasters
Hurricane season in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico begins June 1 and lasts through November 30. Just the thought of being caught in the middle of one of these powerful storms during your honeymoon can make couples avoid the Southeastern US, Mexico, and the Caribbean altogether. However, the region is uncrowded and, usually beautiful, that time of year. Plus, the off-season prices shave about 40 percent off of the cost of the average honeymoon.
There are a few things you can keep in mind to minimize your chances of being effected by a hurricane. Among these are:
-
Book a Cruise – Unlike a land-based vacation, cruise ships have the option to change their course to avoid a major storm. Sure, you may be disappointed in not being able to see your favorite port, but you'll still have a honeymoon.
-
Avoid September – The majority of hurricanes in the Southern Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico occur during the month of September. Avoid this month and you've reduced your risk by half.
-
Take Insurance – Insurance may not prevent a hurricane from happening, but it can save you from losing your travel dollars if you have to change your plans at the last minute due to an impending hurricane. Most airlines will allow you to change your tickets without penalty in the event of a hurricane, but resorts and tour companies are generally less flexible.
-
Consider Resorts that Offer a Hurricane Guarantee – An increasing number of travel companies and resorts offer a "hurricane guarantee." Policies vary, but most offer to reimburse you or give you a travel voucher for any nights that you were not able to stay at the resort due to a hurricane. Among these companies are Club Med Resorts, SuperClubs in the Caribbean, San Souci Resort on Jamaica, and Sandals Resorts. If postings on Internet travel forums are any indication, some guarantee programs are better than others. Best to get any such offer in writing, well ahead of the storm.
Hurricane season doesn't have to mean no travel to the Southeast, Mexico, or the Caribbean. Just manage your risk my taking a few steps in advance of your honeymoon.
