Ideas for Non-Traditional Honeymoons

Honeymoon IslandYour honeymoon should give the two of you a chance to relax and enjoy your first days of married life without the worries of the outside world which is why some couples stick to traditional destinations, such as the Bahamas or Niagara Falls. If that's not exactly what you're looking for, then you might want to consider a few less traditional ideas for honeymoon locations.

Even though you're married grown-ups, you might still want to enjoy the feeling of being a kid again with a Disney honeymoon. Disney theme parks have become such popular destinations with couples that they have even created packages just for honeymooners. For example, one of these packages includes accomodations in any Disney resort, admission to all of the Disney parks, three meals a day at any Disney restaurants, tickets to a Cirque de Soleil performance, and more. The packages are affordable and some can be combined with transportation on Disney cruises.

New Zealand is another non-traditional choice which is gaining in popularity, especially since audiences were awe-struck by its beauty on the big screen in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The gorgeous, nearly untouched environment is ideal for outdoor activities, including sailing and scuba diving. More adventurous couples might want to try bungee jumping or zorbing (involves being rolled down a hill in a large ball). There are also train rides into the mountains and romantic wineries to visit.

Many travel companies offer special honeymoon safari packages for couples which include visits to the top national parks in Africa. Some packages allow you to visit multiple areas, including Kenya, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. The good news is that you don't have to “rough it” during these safaris. Most packages allow you to choose whether you want rustic or relaxing accomodations during your trip. If possible, you should also visit Victoria Falls.

Of course, if you want something more tropical and a little more relaxing, you might want to fly to the Indian Ocean and visit Maldives. Maldives is made of a number of atolls (coral reef islands) and mostly covered in water. The white beaches are ideal for lounging in the sun with a mixed drink and the crystal waters are the perfect spot for swimming, scuba diving, or sailing.

For something even less mainstream, you could visit Reykjavik, Iceland. This capital provides a unique blend of both interesting day time activities and night time fun, including some of the best beer in the world. Iceland is also home to geothermal spas which are areas of water heated by volcanic activity. There is also a botanical garden, a zoo and aquarium, museums, and plenty of outdoor sporting activities. In fact, one of the more popular outdoor activities is hiking on Mount Esja which is about 914 meters (about .57 miles).

Another non-traditional honeymoon idea, especially if you're a nature loving couple, is a tour of the Galapogos Islands. These isolated islands are home to some of the most exotic wildlife in the world and were part of the inspiration for Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Besides admiring the pristine environments, you can also go kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, or even yachting.

These are just a few idea of incredible places you can visit for your magical honeymoon destination. Of course, some of these trips may not ideal for the budget conscious couple – the Galapogos trip starts at around $3500 per person, for example – but they would be once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
